Samuel Shackford was born about 1674. [1] Samuel of Portsmouth died before 11 March 1730/1. He married first Abigail Richards. [1] He married second the widow Frances Peabody of Topsfield on 10 May 1716 in Haverhill or Portsmouth. [2][3] The widow Peabody is said to Frances Hoyt [an otherwise unknown daughter of John Hoyt]. [4] She died between 13 December 1745, when she wrote her will, and 17 April 1749, when it was recorded. [4] She married first Nathaniel Peabody. [5] Nathaniel, the son of Francis Peabody, was born on 29 July 1669. [5] She married third as his third wife Captain James Pearson. [4] James, the son of John Pearson, was born on 28 November 1678 in Lynn and died in 1744 in Haverhill. [4] He married first Hepsibah Swayne. [4] He married second Hannah (Dane) Osgood. [4] She married fourth John Johnson of Andover. [1]

John Shackford and Samuel Shackford (for the widow Richards) were on a 1711 list of inhabitants of Portsmouth entitled to a share in the distribution of the commons. [6]

The will of Samuel Shackford, blockmaker of Portsmouth, was proved on 11 March 1730/1. He left his son William, among other things, half of his wharf and workshop and half of the tools that he used in partnership with his brother John. He also left bequests to his son John, his son-in-laws Samuel Sherburn and Ezekiel Pitman, his son Joshua, the children of his son Samuel, deceased, his wife Frances, his son William's sister Mary Hogden [written in a different handwriting]. He named William his executor. [7]

ii. Elizabeth Shackford of Portsmouth married Ezekiel Pitman of Oyster River on 23 May 1717 in Newington. [8]

iii. Abigail Shackford of Portsmouth married Samuel Sherburn of Portsmouth on 11 June 1719 in Newington. [9]

iv. Deacon William Shackford died in 1773. [10] William Shackford of Portsmouth married Susanna Downing of Newington on 5 October 1727 in Newington. [11] Susanna, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Harrison) Downing, died on 3 March 1752. [12] William married second the widow Patience Downing on 7 May 1752 in Newington. [12] Patience was the widow of Susanna's brother. [12] William married third as her third husband Eleanor Mendum. [12] Eleanor married first Captain John Sherburn. [12] She married second Samuel Marhall. [12]

William was a captain in the militia in 1746. [10]

v. John Shackford died on 2 November 1786 in Chester. He married first Dorcas Lovejoy. He married second the widow Hannah Lancaster.

vi. Joshua Shackford married Lydia Lovejoy on 24 December 1735 in Andover. [13]

vii. Mary Shackford married first Richard Thurber. [1] She married second Alexander Hogden.
